The Black Bottom Line

Nothing sets a snatched colorful eye look off like a bold matte black eyeliner. My beloved Inglot Cosmetics AMC Eyeliner Gel in the shade 77 was bone dry. With no beauty supply store close by, I had to settle for Walmart (don’t sleep on the makeup steals at the hair store). When shopping for drugstore brands I always keep in mind which company owns the brand. Did you know that  L’Oréal owns Lancôme, NYX, Kiehl’s and Yves Saint Laurent Beaute? And that Estee Lauder owns 29 brands including Tom Ford Cosmetics, MAC, and Too Faced? Remembering this helps give me an idea of the quality I’m getting for a cheaper price.

Maybelline and Loreal both belong to the same company whose portfolio is well versed in skin and beauty. Rimmel London, on the other hand, is owned by Coty Incorporated, a company whose portfolio is comprised of mostly fragrances and hair products in the beauty industry. After doing the swatch tests on my arm, the results were clearly evident of which performed better. Let’s start with my least favorite to a top contender.

Rimmel London Wonder Wing Eyeliner- $5.47

This eyeliner claims to be an Intense black formula that lasts all day.  The wing-shaped flexible felt tip applicator is supposed to apply a symmetrical wing every time. Unfortunately, this eyeliner failed in every area. The intense black formula appeared to be transparent. The “flexible felt tip” felt like I was using an 1800’s ink pen to apply the eyeliner. The wing-shaped applicator failed to give me anything symmetrical. This was absolutely the worst eyeliner I have ever used in my life. I have never been so disappointed. I was surprisingly shocked at the results! Rimmel London Exaggerate Automatic Lip Liner makes one of the best drugstore lipliners. I didn’t even think to google for reviews because I LOVE this pencil and knew without a shadow of a doubt, that the eyeliner would be a win too! The lip liner will continue to be a staple in my makeup kit, but this eyeliner… is a no for me!

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Noir- $5.69

I absolutely fell in love with the ultra-fine tip and rich black pigment of this eyeliner. The design of the eyeliner pen made it so easy to hold and the felt tip was able to get into the small crevices of my eye. The only drawback of this eyeliner is that it didn’t dry down to a matte finish. If you don’t mind a satin finish to your eyeliner you will love the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Noir eyeliner.

Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner- 7.49

The Maybelline Gel Eyeliner checked all of my boxes. It was black, matte, and easy to use. I must admit that the  L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Noir was a deeper shade of black, but Maybelline lasted longer and its waterproof. With this eyeliner, a little definitely does a long way. Although it comes with a brush, I would recommend using a smaller brush for more precision. Be alarmed that this eyeliner isn’t for the average makeup user. The buttery smooth formula does make it easy to apply and learn with.
